Is Fancy Text Accessible? What Screen Readers Do With Unicode
Fancy text is still text, but assistive technology reads it very differently from the letters you typed.
The short version
Every style on this site works by replacing your letters with other Unicode characters. A screen reader does not see a design choice, it sees unusual code points, and many of them are announced by their formal Unicode names. A word set in cursive may be read out as a sequence of mathematical script letters rather than as the word itself.
For a sighted reader the sentence looks styled. For someone using a screen reader or a voice assistant, the same sentence can arrive as a string of letter names, or be skipped altogether. That is a real cost, and it is the reason this page exists.
What each style tends to do
Severity varies by style, and it is worth knowing which ones are riskier before you publish.
- Mathematical alphabets - bold, italic, bold italic, cursive, gothic, double struck, sans serif and monospace - are usually announced as letter names, so a short word becomes a long announcement.
- Symbol alphabets - circled, squared and parenthesized letters - are read as a letter plus a shape, and numbers read as circled or squared digits.
- Small and raised forms - superscript, subscript and tiny text - are often named individually and are hard to follow even when read correctly.
- Combining-mark styles - strikethrough, underline, slash through and zalgo - attach extra marks to each letter. Zalgo in particular can be read one mark at a time, or trigger a very long announcement for a single word.
- Reordered styles - upside down and mirrored - are pasted in reverse order, so assistive technology reads the characters backwards.
Why the tools cannot simply fix this
Unicode does not carry a note that says these characters are a styling of ordinary letters; the mapping is visual, not semantic. A converter could add a hidden plain-text alternative, but almost every app strips that markup the moment you paste, so the negotiation has to happen between the writer and the reader instead.
This site therefore has no magic switch. What it has is a list of styles, and a page that tells you which ones are safest.
How to write with fancy text and stay readable
The practical rule is to treat decorated characters as a visual accent, never as the carrier of meaning. A few patterns cover most situations.
- Keep fancy runs short. One word or a name in a heading is far easier to follow than a decorated paragraph.
- Repeat anything essential in plain text. Prices, dates, addresses, rules and instructions belong in ordinary letters.
- Put the plain version nearby. A bio line in cursive plus the same line in plain text serves both audiences without extra effort.
- Avoid the heavy styles in live announcements. A glitched or reversed post about a time-sensitive event is a poor choice.
- Offer an alternative channel. If a promotion only exists in a fancy post, a link to a plain page removes the barrier entirely.
If you are the one reading fancy text
Most screen readers let you change the verbosity level, and some allow you to skip characters with unusual properties. If a page reads badly, switching the voice to a mode that announces fewer details, or asking the site owner for a plain-text version, is usually faster than fighting the text.
Voice assistants are stricter than screen readers. They frequently fail to match a fancy name to a contact, a calendar entry or a search query, so keeping a plain copy of important names is worthwhile.
Why we publish this page
Most fancy text sites ship the converter and stop there. We think the honest note belongs next to the tool: these characters are a look, not a format, and they can turn a friendly bio into noise for the people using screen readers.
Our converter does not upload, store or analyse what you type, and it does not install anything on your device. If a style that suits your message also happens to be a safe one, that is a happy coincidence worth checking for before you press copy.
